This was definately one of the strangest requests i ever got from a client.
This time the Royal Zuilens Fanfare Orchestra asked Marcel (LSSLSS) and
me to remix and vj scenes from famous movies they were playing the soundtracks of.
To us this was a pretty big thing…mocking about with the works of Morricone and
Spielberg for instance we don’t take lightly! In the end we played uber classics such as
Jurassic Park, Mary Poppins, Back to the Future, Last of the Mohicans, Schindler’s list,
Saturday Night Fever, Rocky and more….
The whole production team and the orchestra were so cool and serious about doing the show right
so Marcel and me were stoked to do this thing right…all i can say…it was really a great way
to start off 2012 with this show. Actually even just playing in an actual theatre where people
sit down to see you perform was already such a welcome difference!
The guys from Sfeer Events asked me to create a teaser for their latest stint
“new year’s twelve”, a sequel to last years new years party. This year they asked
me to design the stage with a huge led setup. Like last year i made a teaser to
announce the event and also i will create the visuals for the night, all based on the
artworks created by Joost from eyeron.
I guess i know what i’m doing at new year’s eve…this is going to be one awesome party!
This was one weird booking, i tell you that! Through my friends over at triomf i was booked for a
90’s now show for some retro visuals. Then i learned that they were booked for a guest
appearance at 90’s forever…turns out this thing is HUUGE…vipdeck, nice LED setup and everything!
WTF…i was flabbergasted when we got there…just check out their lineup with big names from the 90s.
Man…what a show….what a night…
One of my favorite festivals in Holland…and it’s getting bigger and bigger! This actually being a
kijkbuiskinderen/kbk visuals stint, they asked me to host one of the smaller rooms for them.
Turns out the first night they shifted the line-ups and i get to do visuals for James holden,
Nathan Fake and Michael Mayer…that’s a pretty neat line-up in my book. I’m a big fan of holden
and was looking for a chance to do visuals on his music for quite a while now.
Next weekend on the 26th i’ll be hosting the ligtcafe for the kids as well with on deck none
other then orgue electronique and I-F…give me bunker all the way baby!
All your italo are belong to us!
Through some connections i was asked to do some visuals for this event. Knowing Flexican from some
shows before i knew this was going to be fun. I would say that urban music is definately different to
do visuals on and this year has been a healthy mix of shows and music types. I feel my skills are still
increasing show by show. Still i’m thinking about new and better visuals for LED and making better
shows.
My favorite guest act was definately hydroboys…i had never even heard of them before so that was
cool but also flinke namen are always cool to see on stage and the guest appearance from CHUCKIE
promoting his all black dirty house concept in the RAI december 17 (where i’ll be doing visuals as well!)
was pretty cool! All in all, i’m happy my schedule worked out like this so i could do this show!
Subway asked me to VJ at their seminal XL edition at the maassilo october 15.
To get some extra promotion they also asked me to make some visuals from the graphic
design created by studio spass. This tease is part of the package and i think it makes
a nice crossover between the dirty visual style i feel belongs to dubstep and the clear
and distinct visual style studio spass had deigned for subway and subway recordings.
Anyways….this party is going to be massive…better you be there peeps!
For the ones who read this archive-blog regularly you know i’ve been making paintings for a long
time now. Somehow VJ-ing took a big part of my time lately and i’ve been taking a break from painting
also because art became more serious for me in the last couple of years by doing exhibitions, selling
works and even curating shows….but this week i made this one….nothing serious and just for fun.
Just AWESOME…i love it. It’s about the adventures of MR. Rogers…an orange haired cat.
I’m thinking of making it a series. I really had fun making this one and i just wanted to share the fun!
PRSPCT’s head honcho Thrasher asked me to visualise his area at this year’s Q-BASE. After seeing
the line-up i knew this was going to be one awesome night! 12 hours of solid visuals with on decks:
eye-d&hidden, bare noize, i-gor, panacea, limewax and lots more! With 12 hours on the clock i
could go down in the archives and go really deep and dark, especially with the 10k AL projector the
guys from q-dance found me…the whole bunker was dominated by my visuals! It’s very rare that i
get to play with no lighting operator. But seriously though…12 hours of visuals….that’s some
awesome show!
This festival has been on my wishlist since 2006 so naturally i was stoked to hear i was booked
as Ferry’s VJ. Technically festivals can always be a bit challenging. Both getting your rider demands
met, as well as getting LED stage mappings in order in a short timeframe. In the end these difficulties
only prove the gig to be more worthwhile…for one i’m really sure i rocked this baby silly! I really gave
all i had and went all out, making sure no creamfielder would ever forget i was there!
Ferry’s show was the madnote! This certainly is one of the shows of 2011 i will look back upon proudly!
Ferry asked me to do some visuals here for him at this tour de force weekender.
First inkom maastricht…then some hours later legendary and sold out SouthWest4 weekender
festival in the middle of London, where we were a guest at Above&Beyond’s GroupTherapy area.
It was nice to finally meet Spencer AKA rebeloverlay. One VJ who’s style i really like!
Apart from a little rain this was a good start of the saturday! Off to Creamfields yeah!
I did some visuals for the inkom guys last year as well and i really liked their approach and
production. These guys are just really cool! Every year they organise the biggest student
event in Maastricht in the MECC with 6500 visitors. With shows on tuesday (with DJ PAUL!)
and on friday with Lasgo, Memphis Maniacs and Ferry Corsten this was my midweek delivery!
Still being a bit fucked up just coming from Lowlands, the tuesday production was a bit hard, but
both nights being sold out and everybody going bonkers, i really had a lot of fun doing visuals here!
After 2009 i really wanted to do visuals at lowlands again. My friends from kijkbuiskinderen/
kbkvisuals and ledlease/kunstlicht asked me to co-pilot the gig and help make some extra visuals.
For this area they created a special setup with 5 strokes of flex led on the ceiling, a 7mm LED wall
behind the artists and a tile mapped 9K projection above the entrance in the back…all in all a pretty
crazy setup commandeered by two servers and 4 content laptops. Then on the sunday the cavalry
arrived with some extra lasers and we took the whole place apart. So many cool artists passed the
line this year but my personal favorites were definatley KAKKMADDAFAKKA, Tom Trago and Emalkay.
With 6 vj’s on deck this was definately a new thing for me, trying so many crossovers and each others loops.
This weekend Ferry’s bookings brought me to Romania! So after a 3 hour drive from Bucarest
we arrived at lovely Constanta at the black sea coast to rock a show at the Mission Dance Weekender! The Romanian countryside was really cool to see…Romania is not all you would
expect and the people were really friendly…also hanging out with Above&Beyond and Paul van
Dyk’s crew was unexpected and a lot of fun…very cool to see the shows from other big names
behind the scenes! Personal highlight of this weekend was definitely sitting at the black sea
beach just after the show at 06:30! Maybe this trance thing is really getting to me
After the electronic family stint i had 10 minutes to pack up my gear and get myself backstage
to take a shuttle to the jet terminal where we got on a jet to Birmingham. Ferry was doing the
prime time show at the God’s Kitchen area at Global Gathering, just after Aly&Fila and before
Marcus Schultz who were also at Electronic Family and joined us in the jet. Again a really nice
LED setup where i really got into playing the new visuals i made for Ferry. On monday it’s back
to the studio to do final corrections on them and prepare for the next show in Romania on Friday!
I was asked to do some visuals for Ferry Corsten again this weekend.
It’s been a while since i had to focus on trance music but i came up with
some fresh new ideas for Ferry’s 2011 visual look which is fully based on LEDs.
I tested my gear and made the mapping on friday and then on saturday we
started off in the “a state of trance” area with Ferry b2b with Armin and me
b2b with Carlo, one of Armin’s regular vj’s eyesupply. It was cool to mix it up.
Then 100 minutes deep at the mainstage where Ferry really got into his thing
and i could take some time to test my new visuals.
Eyesupply invited me to host an area at Belgium 3-day monster dance festival
Tomorrowland…i could not say no. The first day i visualised the Trance Addicted
area with simon patterson and Aly&Fila who i wanted to do some visuals for for a
while now…then the second day the roster got mixed up and i ended up double
teaming the Format area with Angelo with a pretty cool LED setup including the
ceiling…and with brodinsky and don rimini on decks…It was cool to see Angelo at
work on the big LED deco and it gave some new ideas and inspirations for future
work. Then the last day was definately the best one!
Dim Mak in the house…and they rocked it big time…from the first record to the last
almost 13 hours later… The day was cool with uffie and Gtronic but the two last
shows dadalife and steve aoki b2b afrojack really went nutter!! I really enjoyed
visualising their sounds on the last day…a 12 hour set really makes you get creative
with your loops and material!
Style Today together with club Panama organised this openings party for the
2011 edition of the Amsterdam International Fashion Week…Nice music and
nice fashion shows on the catwalk…very cool to do visuals for and cool people
to work with. Doing visuals for a catwalk show is so much different from a party!
Again Imps&Elfs from amsterdam asked Jur to build their stand at the Pitti Bimbo
at the Forza da Bazzo in Firenze. So for a seventh time we travelled there, i do have
to say that the city gets better and better every time we go there. This time we even
found a hall of fame to paint some graffiti and hung out with local hero TOTO DYNAMITE!
The thunder gods of drum n bass ascended from the higher heavens to bang
some eardrums tonight! HOT-DANG! Another monster edition of PRSPCT XL.
Number 13 to be precise. I noticed that i’ve been doing a lot of prspct shows
these days which is cool! It’s a nice variation to the other show i do. No need
to tell you how awesome this party was…you know already! Here’s some
photography from Tom Tactix…i really like how he shows the intensity of these
nights, his photography really rocks!
It’s been a while since i played last at Obsession, but i remember doing shows for them
close to ten years ago when they were still indoors! Now obsession has 5 stages and close
to 50 DJ’s…and again and again….SOLD OUT to the brim!
This year’s main stage was the logo character of new party network “BOLO”. Inside
BOLO’s eye was a big LED screen and also BOLO was holding a LED screen.
So i created animations with his eyes and made him look more tired as the evening
progressed but also made a small set with circular animations to fit the round screen.
With headliners on deck Dr Lectroluv and Audio Bullys it was an aweome party…i love
how enthousiastic these guys are and still going strong after 15 years! Much respect!
This weekend 3 events…starting with Loveboat010 at the legendary SS Rotterdam
cruise ship with special guest Luciën Foort together with Marcello and Ben Liebrand.
Then we’re also up in Antwerpen. We have Cresst Vs PRSPCT in club Petrol getting down
and dirty with Panacea, Counterstrike, The Sect, Cooh and Broken Note…it’s ON!!!
Then on Saturday we have our regular 80’s and 90’s at off-corso. Same time we made
this promo visual below for the upcoming PRSPCT XL13. Like Charlie Lownoise and Mental
Theo once said it: WONDERFUL DAYS!
Again a massive barrage of dubstep in my home-base off-corso. Subway’s head honcho NICON
did it again! Sold out and awesome until the end. This edition’s DJ’s include Bare Noize, Cookie Monsta
and always brutal EMALKAY. What i really liked about this edition was JT on lights…our shows are
really coming together and its really starting to show, 5 out of the 7 hours fully sync in color and
dynamics! Also i’m proud to say that my set held up great, great to see my hard work making new
materials is paying off. Here’s a video…thank you…and good night!
Another weird weekend doing visuals. I went to see Battles perform at Motel Mozaique festival
at my homebase off-corso. While helping Greg getting his visuals for Dan Deacon’s show together,
my friends from lowriders asked me to do some visuals for their set at the end of the night.
Beatno and ruwedata did a good job keeping everyone on the floor after 2562’s set and at
keeping shit wobbly, it was cool finally doing visuals for lowriders. Next day was a whole different
level, mixing up retro visuals at the Mezz in Breda. It’s been years since i played there last! I really
liked their sound, playing some of the more indie sounds but damn difficult to do visuals on.
All in all another fun packed weekend!
My job really kicks ass! Third year in a row eyesuplly called me to do some visuals here for them
at THE seminal hardcore music event. Again they gave me the hardest area with noisekick,
hongkong violence, hellfish and unexist. Going at it for 9 straight hours and the area being pretty much
full all of the time i had a lot of fun going back to back with menno on lights and generally just
hauling ass wih my super brigh LEDwall from pixelscreen. And with all my gabbers here…kunstlicht,
kijkbuiskinderen and 250k/eyesupply hosting the whole thing…it was like a family picknick…but with
cooler people and with cooler music….unexist was SICK i tell you!
Yet another PRSPCT! This edition was at the off-corso. And off-corso being my
original resident place back in the days it was really cool to visualise this party.
Its really nice working with a lighting and sound crew you know well on a night
like this. With Dieselboy dropping one of his monstersets i’d say this was the
booking that made my week’s worth of grin!
One of the great things about being a vj is that unlike a dj who usually plays
just one style of music a vj regularly plays to several musical genres.
This week the guys from kijkbuiskinderen booked me to make introduction trailers
and visualise this soul/r&b event for them at a sold-out THE SAND in Amsterdam.
Headlining the show were soul/R&B singers Ginuwine and Avant.
With R&B being difficult to visualise, it was awesome to play the nice LEDsetup
from ledlease/kunstlicht and to concentrate on making beautiful atmospheres
and really supporting Avant and Ginuwine’s concert.
Great to see i’m still finding new aspects of visualising and VJing.
Below is Luuk operating the setup at the end of the show.
With a very special valentine edition coming up. The guys from sfeer events asked
me if i was up for doing a little mapping-show on a 30mm LEDwall they patted down for me.
So, if you go out on saturday people…don’t forget to bring sunglasses!
Joost from eyeron made this small vid! It shows a little what the show was like.
Marcel from LSSLSS and me were asked to come up with some fresh motion graphics for the
2011 collection show of Björn Borg over at the Endemol studio’s in Amsterdam. With less then
a week to go we were really happy the Borgdudes from Sweden sent us the original patterns
from the underwear to get funky with. With special musical guest Mark Ronson & the Business Intl.
hosting a very special guest appearance from Boy George we now had all the ingredients to rock
out the show. We created 30 minutes of new visuals for this show, specially for the 3 part LED setup
cooked up by DNA, Unlimited and Hulskamp. In the end we also co-piloted the operating together with
Hulskamp to make sure the timing came correct. Awesome show, definitely one for the books!
I don’t think I’ve ever posted about this before but this show just got me remembering things. Since
2004 I’ve been doing all the visuals for we all love 80s and 90s. First just in off-corso, but later in
clubs throughout all of holland like the level, panama, 013, effenaar, bozzini, winkel van sinkel and
many more. Now all of these shows are visualised with my pre-recorded mixes on a HD execept for
the one at off-corso back where i started way over a hundred of these shows ago.
This week i’m helping jur @ the PittiBimbo in Florence. What an awesome job i’ve got,
seventh time going to Florence. And as fas as a client goes…imps and elfs are a cool
bunch…everything looks superstylin’. I like that eye for detail.
Check them out here: http://www.imps-elfs.nl
Kijkbuiskinderen invited me to do some visuals for them at this newyear celebration event
at the maassilo on the huge LEDvisual setup from awakenings the day before. It was a pretty
cool wall, ledlease/kunstlicht did a real cool job on that.
But the complex setup really needed two people to fly a rig like that. It was really cool to work
with the guys from kunstlicht and kijkbuiskinderen on this…everybody was really tired from the
day before. Also i wasn’t really sure what to expect because urban isn’t really my forté.
But actually the party was really crowded and fun to do.
Sfeer evenementen wanted to do something special for their annual new year’s bash,
so they created NewYearsElf or short NY11. A mystical flavored party with some cool
extra’s like elven dancers and models on swings…a whole bar crew with wings and my
midi controlled 3 screen setup….in short, i made a special VJ set suitable for a 3 screen
setup and matching the whole NY11 theme…the extra wide 3 screen format was very
cool to work with…much nicer then your average 16:9 or 4:3 set-up. Hanging the
3 projectors and matching the 3 screens to 1 big visual was a serious hassle but so
worth it considering the extra wide screen projection i ended up with.
In the end the whole party was sold out and the everybody was partying all out!
Sfeer rocked the spot once again!
Prspct is all over the place! This XL edition was held at the (sold out!) Factory010, the
10th floor of the maassilo building…an awesome industrial location for this type
of heavy industrial parties. With 3 area’s in hardcore, drum’n'bass and dubstep
this was another smasher in its own right! With cool sets from Radium, Panacea,
Outside Agency, Black Sun Empire, Counterstrike, Broken Note, Teknoist and Bryan
Fury…pffffff…….another 9 hours solid hardcore vj-ing…no jokes here!
The eyesupliers keep calling me for these dirty shows. Which is a good thing!
With no sleep and less then half a show prepared i went off to switserland
to do Masters of Hardcore Basel. Awesome way to test my new midi controller
….fuck it….ipads are for the weakhearted! Ill stick with midi controllers for a while!
With the angerfist and noize suppressors shows as my favorites, also korsakoff had
a good run, so i put this small youtube clip of her set with my visuals on it here too.
Noize suppressor’s new sonar live show was a blast to do visuals on, too bad it was
on these “small” LCD’s. The Swiss laser dudes really wooped my ass here.
